Are You Covered?
Have you ever wondered what would happen to your family if you were disabled and could not work? Did you know that a 35 year old man has a 50% chance of a disability lasting 90 days or longer? If that 35 year old man is disabled for longer than 90 days, the average length of disability will be 2.8 years. The older the individual, the higher the probability of illness. Here are some interesting statistics:
· One in four Canadians will contract heart disease. Of those diagnosed, 1 in 2 will be under the age of 65.
· In 2007 there were 62,780 new reported cases of cancer in Ontario. 44% of men and 39% of women have a probability of developing cancer in their lifetime.
· By 2016 there are expected to be a total of 2.4 million Canadians living with diabetes at a cost of $8.14 billion.
Drug costs are rising and will continue to rise into the future as new and improved drugs come to the marketplace. Additionally, newer drug treatment regimes are allowing hospitals to send individuals home earlier than ever before, so although the average hospital stay duration may be declining, the need for personal drug coverage is escalating. Take for example, the cost of cancer treatments. In these situations, the public system is less likely to pay for drugs administered at home. These drugs can range in cost from $5,000 to $100,000, depending on the type of cancer and length of treatment. The average treatment cost is in the range of $65,000.
